Capital One Hall: il marmo come sistema nel progetto architettonico

In large-scale projects, marble does not function as a simple cladding material, but becomes part of a broader system in which material, structure, and performance must operate coherently and synergistically.

It is within this context that Marmi Minucciano’s contribution takes shape, through the supply of marble for architectural cladding intended for complex interventions, where visual continuity and control over the material become essential.

Surfaces, Light, and the Construction of the Project

Located in Tysons, Virginia, Capital One Hall is a performing arts center that serves as the focal point of a broader urban development, integrating cultural, commercial, and public functions.

The façade is composed of a system of stone panels and transparent surfaces that develop through folds and variations in inclination, creating a continuous and articulated composition. Designed by Tim Carl of HGA, the project interprets cladding as a three-dimensional system in which the panels unfold through space, generating a rhythm that changes throughout the day in response to sunlight.

Vertical openings are integrated within the folds and designed to capture and reflect natural light into the interior spaces, contributing to visual comfort while reducing direct solar exposure.

Within this system, marble participates in the construction of the architectural image: light flows across the surfaces, emphasizing variations in depth and producing a dynamic reading of the whole. The selection of Bianco Cattani® fits within this logic, allowing surfaces to remain uniform and legible even at large scale, while the natural pattern introduces controlled variation that accompanies the rhythm of the folds and reinforces the perception of volume.

Material Control Throughout Every Stage of the Project

An intervention such as Capital One Hall requires a level of control that begins long before installation: the definition of the façade was supported by simulations and design verifications necessary to optimize the geometry of the folds and the behavior of light across the surfaces.

Within this process, material selection also becomes central from a performance perspective. Bianco Cattani marble was chosen for its physical and mechanical properties, which make it particularly suited for exterior and large-scale applications: its high resistance and long-term stability allow it to withstand weather exposure, thermal variation, and changing climatic conditions without compromising the quality of the surfaces.

From a construction perspective, the cladding system is supported by a dedicated technical structure developed to manage the weight of the marble panels and allow their application across inclined and non-coplanar surfaces.

In this context, material selection became an integral part of the project: chromatic continuity, stability, and coherence between panels were essential in ensuring a uniform reading across the entire façade. The project involved the use of more than 7,000 Bianco Cattani marble panels – a figure that reflects both the scale and the complexity of the realized system.

Marble in Public Space

Capital One Hall was conceived as an open and accessible space intended to host events, performances, and collective activities within a broader urban system.

Beyond its technical characteristics, marble here is required to preserve over time not only its performance, but also the perceptual quality of the surfaces: resistance, stability, and the ability to maintain legibility become central elements.

The material defines the identity of the building and accompanies its presence over time, maintaining the relationship between architecture and public space. It is within this balance of pattern, light, and continuity that our white marble finds a defining role within the project.
